It’s been two months into 2018 and “The Chainsmokers” are back in the limelight. The EDM duo, who dominated the airwaves of 2016 and 2017 with hits such as “Closer” and “Something Just Like This”, have a new release. Producers and members Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, had a big couple year; winning a Grammy Awards with their dance tune “Don’t Let Me Down” and becoming some of the biggest names in EDM music.
This year, however, after nine months of no new music, they decided to take an artistic turn. They are saying that their new single “Sick Boy” is the beginning of their darker style of music that they are going to work on. In an interview with Forbes Magazine, Drew Taggart (whom has taken up singing as well) said about their new song “The next topic is a little bit darker, but I think that’s the tone of society right now. Our stuff is always a reflection of what’s going on in our lives and the world around us.”
This interview can highlight a strength of Chainsmokers, they have always kept current with the culture and times. At this time in the United States, things are different, tensions are high, and the duo is trying to capture this sentiment. In the interview, Taggert then goes on to discuss the frustration that the song portrays and how he things fame has changed him, “You become this thing that isn’t actually who you are as a person, and it’s hard to get around.” In many ways this new sound reflects some of the other generational angst by artists such as Twenty-One Pilots. It will be interesting to see how the whole EP is perceived upon release, but Taggart makes it clear in the interview that this will be an entire project, “We’re going to keep them coming. We have a lot of stuff we want to say, a lot of new music.” The jury is still out on how the public and critics perceive this sound, but there is no doubt the duo is being creative.
