Dr. Mikhail Blagosklonny, Editor-in-Chief of Oncotarget, has found that Rapamycin is a drug that not only prevents organ transplant rejection, but can be used to fight cancer by increasing patients lifespans. Mikhail Blagosklonny is a professor of Oncology at the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute located in Buffalo, New York. Mikhail has done rigorous research on cancer and therapies used for cancer patients. Rapamycin is also known as Sirolimus. Sirolimus was discovered and controlled in 1972 when there were bacterial samples found on Easter Island. When first discovered Sirolimus was used as an anti-fungal agent, but once research was done they found that it was a drug that had imunosuppressive and antiproliferative properties which would change how cancer was treated all together.

Rapamycin is known as one of the best drugs available and here’s why. Rapamycin is used as an anti-rejection drug when doing transplants; patients bodies can reject the organs their trying to replace and when that happens they use Rapamycin to counter act that reaction. Rapamycin can also treat patients with a rare disease known as hemolytic-uremic syndrome. This disease is when someone has the combination of anemia, kidney failure, and low platelet count. Rapamycin treats a disease known as Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM); which is an extremely rare lung disease found only to affect women of the childbearing age and Rapamycin blocks the mTOR gateway to cure this disease. Rapamycin also treats cancer, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), Facial angiofibromas, and is used for coronary stent coating to prevent re-stenosis in the arteries.

Mikhail not only does research on cancer, but he has also done extensive research on the science of aging and how to prevent aging. Aging is a constant growth which is caused by signaling pathways that includes targeting Rapamycin. Rapamycin can treat disease and it can treat aging in people. Mikhail has discovered that with the right dosage aging can be prevented if Rapamycin is used properly. Rapamycin was proved to improve the immunity of people. Research went further and discovered that Rapamycin can treat Alzheimer and Osteoporosis, but Rapamycin is still being researched to see if it can actually heal other diseases such as cancer, autoimmunity, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

Mikhail Blagosklonny has plans for Oncology. Mikhail is interested in discovering why cancer is more common in older people versus others. Mikhail not only intends to find out what cures cancer, but how to treat cancer in a way that it’s not completely painful for the patient to endure; while also hoping to cut the expenses of cancer treatment all together. He has been researching on how cancer cells can be eliminated within the body of a patient while not destroying their normal cells needed for recovery. The progress Mikhail Blagosklonny has made is outstanding and throughout his search he hopes to inspire people around the world to pick up his research when he is gone and continue the phenomenal work he has done in hope that the cure is found. Mikhail has shown true dedication and has discovered so many great things; maybe one day there will be a major break through and we can treat cancer and other diseases once in for all.
